Oceanside High School

Location - Oceanside High School is situated in downtown Oceanside between the beach and Highway 5. The school is only a half mile from the Pacific Ocean and has views of the sea from its campus. There are many shops and restaurants within walking distance of the school, as well as the main branch of the Oceanside Public Library, which could be useful for research projects. The school also borders two gang neighborhoods, and this has created problems for the school in the past. The school has already had multiple lockdowns this year due to its proximity to these neighborhoods, but the students are resilient, and seem to have a positive attitude about the situation.

Academics -  Oceanside has struggled in the past decade with the state achievement tests, and has not met their Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for two years in a row,. The consequence of this is that have been placed on Program  Improvement, which means they have to offer transfers to other schools, and they need to provide tutors for students. It is also possible that they may be forced to have a charter school come in and take over the school.

On a positive note, the school has implemented the All Pirates Pass program, which ï»¿includes a mandatory after-school  tutoring program for all students who are receiving a D or F in their class. This is one of the positive consequences of the the school being on Program Improvement, as many of the students probably could not afford private tutoring based on the low socio-economic  status of many of the students.

The Students - The  majority of students at Oceanside High are Latino/Hispanic students, which make up 61% of the student population. The next biggest group is white students, who make up 23% of the students. African American students make up 9%, while Asian students make up 7%. 13% of the students are classified as English Learners.  47% of the students at Oceanside are on the free or reduced lunch program, meaning that they come from low income families.

Due to the violence that is somewhat a part of the culture in Oceanside there is somewhat a feeling of ambivalence among the students about the violence in the surrounding neighborhoods. Students treat lockdowns like a minor inconvenience,  and a student last week was overheard saying that she hoped for a lockdown so that she wouldn't have to go to after-school practice.

College Preperation -  One probelm that Oceanside struggles with greatly is preparing their students for college. Only 24% of students of students at Oceanside meet the UC or CSU requirements to attend to a 4-year college compared to 43% in the rest of California. This indicates that Oceanside is simply not offering enough classes to students who hope to go to college, according to Oceanside High.
