The Whole Class

Tommy is a 15-year-old freshman, who has been diagnosed with autism. In addition, based on his IEP, Tommy has “deficits in visual-motor integration, verbal comprehension, adaptive skills and pragmatics, which impact his performance”. Because learning new content about pollution relies heavily on new vocabulary, Tommy may find learning new content challenging since he has difficulty with visual comprehension. Tommy has low self-confidence and his perception of what he knows is much lower than what it actually is.
Linguistic & Academic language background:
Based on Tommy’s previous grades and test scores, he has consistently performed very well in English and History (A’s and B’s) and poorly in math and science (D’s and C’s, respectively). Tommy excels in the language arts.
Physical, social and emotional development:
Tommy is a good student who wants to do well. He takes careful notes, studies, and works hard to complete all assignments. Tommy needs a lot of support, positive reinforcement, and a comfortable classroom setting to boost his confidence and focus more on his progress as opposed to his mistakes.

I selected this student because he is at risk for failing several of his classes. He rarely participates in class activities, takes notes, or follows instructions. I suspect that he may be trying to compensate for feeling lost in class. He will need extra support and encouragement to catch up.

 Readiness Level:

Current grade in science is a D+ (67%). Has Ds, and Fs in most of his classes.

 Learning Profile:

visual, hands-on
Interests: socializing; hip-hop; girls; video games; skateboarding; wants to be a firefighter

Differentiation & Student Descriptions

Emmy has been struggling to learn new content in a different language. She is earning a D in Biology. Although she works hard in class and is very good about asking for help, she’s had a difficult time grasping new concepts.

Learning Profile:

poor reading profiency; uncomfortable presenting in front of class; works very well in groups.
Interests:

part of AVID (academic success program to help students get into college); enjoys socializing with her girlfriends

This unit is ideal for the diverse classes of high school students we teach. It engages the students and excites them about the material because they learn about the impact of pollution on their local environment and community. Students love socializing and need to learn how to interact with each other cooperatively, and this unit is comprised mostly of team projects. Our surveys indicate students enjoy hands-on activities, labs, and use of technology, and our unit meets those needs as well. Students are given  the freedom to  pursue their creative and artistic inspirations in this unit. This unit incorporates all different learning modalities so that each student has rich learning experiences. This should meet the learning needs of all our students.
