Cooperative Learning

Throughout this unit, students will be provided with ample opportunities to work with their peers. Students will create posters, graphs, and PSAs (public service announcements) to develop a better understanding of the content. Small groups will allow for students to develop better peer relationships, better social skills and positive interdependence, which leads to a stronger learning community. Also, the activities provided will allow groups to process information in a way that would not be attainable by doing the work on their own. The activities will provide for face-to-face interactions on a daily basis. Each student will be held accountable for their role in completing all group tasks. For example, students will work together to collect data on their heart rates to determine if air pollution has a negative effect on their heart rate. Each group will create a graph detailing any differences in heart rate, which can only be completed if each member completes their role. Students will also be held accountable for how they work together with the rest of their group. Groups will be also be held accountable for completing all tasks including creating a PSA that will be broadcasted. Students will also have the opportunity to discuss and debate issues that relate to air pollution and its effect on the earth and their health, which will also help develop social skills.
